Belén Suárez Lantarón is a professor at the University of Extremadura (UEx) and director of the Equality Unit of the same institution.
With a degree in Educational Psychology and a doctorate in Psychology and Educational Sciences, Suárez Lantarón specializes in guidance and tutoring, inclusive education and attention to diversity, as well as innovation and educational resources.
On February 12th, she came to the institution IES Zurbarán to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and she answered some questions that students from third of ESO and second of Bachillerato asked.
She gave the students a presentation based on her experience working as a headteacher of the unit of Gender Equality in the Universidad de Extremadura. She answered questions both in relation to her psychology degree and also, questions related to equality and gender studies. She explained why Spain cannot be considered yet an equal country as women still suffer inequalities in some fields, such as family reconciliation, powerful positions e.g. the university or even the lower educational system. She also showed some examples of inspirational women through history and explained interesting concepts such as glass ceiling and sticky floor. Moreover, she focussed on women in science; she talked about the different data between women and men in science careers using data and graphics. She mentioned some examples of historical films such as Oppenhimer in which women had been erased from history. Finally, she explained how important and powerful women are often judged by their appearance instead of their knowledge and duties.
In addition, she helped the future psychologists to solve their doubts about their degree. They were interested in discovering how sport affects us psychologically, how to deal with closed-minded people and how to find a good psychologist. She took the time and effort to answer every question the best she could.
In conclusion, in the students opinion it was a great talk. They found it very interesting and she clarified all the doubts that the students had. They claim that the talk was very illustrative and inspiring to keep fighting against gender inequalities.

El 12 de febrero acudió al IES Zurbarán para conmemorar el Día Internacional de la Mujer y la Niña en la Ciencia, y respondió a algunas preguntas realizadas por estudiantes de 3º de ESO y 2º de Bachillerato.
Ofreció al alumnado una charla acerca de la Mujer y la Niña en la Ciencia y basó su exposición en su experiencia como directora de la Unidad de Igualdad de Género en la Universidad de Extremadura. Respondió a preguntas tanto relacionadas con su formación en Psicología como con estudios en igualdad de género. Explicó por qué España no puede considerarse aún un país igualitario, ya que las mujeres siguen sufriendo desigualdades en algunos ámbitos laborales o educativos, por ejemplo, viéndose en mayor medida afectadas por la dificultad en la conciliación familiar, difícil acceso a los cargos de poder (por ejemplo, en la universidad o incluso en los niveles educativos inferiores). También mostró algunos ejemplos de mujeres inspiradoras a lo largo de la historia y explicó conceptos interesantes como el «techo de cristal» y el «suelo pegajoso».
Además, centrándose en la ciencia; habló sobre las diferencias existentes entre hombres y mujeres en carreras científicas utilizando datos reales y gráficos. Mencionó ejemplos de películas históricas, como Oppenheimer, en las que las mujeres han sido borradas de la historia. Finalmente, explicó cómo las mujeres importantes y con acceso a puestos de poder suelen ser juzgadas por su apariencia en lugar de por sus conocimientos o gestión de responsabilidades.
Asimismo, ayudó a futuros psicólogos a resolver dudas sobre su futura carrera. Estaban interesados en descubrir cómo nos afecta psicológicamente el deporte, cómo tratar con personas de mente cerrada y cómo encontrar un buen psicólogo. Se tomó el tiempo y el esfuerzo de responder a cada pregunta lo mejor posible.
En conclusión, en opinión del alumnado fue una charla excelente. La encontraron muy interesante y resolvió todas las dudas que tenían. Afirman que la charla fue muy ilustrativa e inspiradora para seguir luchando contra las desigualdades de género.
